Gemini – Your Chat History and AI Training

On standard consumer-facing Gemini plans, user data can be used for model training unless you opt out. A subset of chats are also reviewed by human reviewers (including Google’s trained service providers) to help improve models. Reviewed chats are retained for up to three years, but are disconnected from your account before being sent to service providers.

Settings you can control (consumer accounts):

  • Gemini Apps Activity (most important toggle): If you turn “Keep Activity” off and don’t submit feedback, Google will not use your future chats to improve its AI models. You can do this here: https://myactivity.google.com/product/gemini
  • Retention period: For consumer accounts, Google stores Gemini conversations with a default retention period of 18 months. You can change this to 3 or 36 months in your settings.

Caveat: It’s all-or-nothing. Google Gemini doesn’t let you opt out of data usage for model improvement unless you turn off chat history entirely. There’s no middle ground where you keep history but block training.

Note: Free consumer users are opted in to data training by default and need to manually opt out.Sources:
