Letters of Old

In a remarkable turn of events, a craftsman’s routine  renovation project in the quaint village of Matour, France, unearthed a captivating piece of history. As the worker peeled back layers of old floorboards, he stumbled upon a hidden treasure that had lain dormant for over a century – a handwritten letter penned in 1894.

Unexpected discovery beneath the floorboards

Ludovic Mollier, a skilled artisan, was going about his usual business of renovating an old house in Matour, a small village in the Saône-et-Loire region of France. Hidden away from prying eyes for 130 years, a glass bottle containing a carefully rolled piece of parchment caught Mollier’s attention. The bottle, which nearly ended up in the trash, held within it a message from the past that would soon captivate the entire village.

A message from the past revealed

Curiosity piqued, Mollier and his colleague carefully broke open the bottle to retrieve the delicate scroll inside. As they unrolled the aged parchment, they were transported back to June 15, 1894. The letter, written by a certain Guillaume Mandelier, revealed itself to be a touching message left for future generations. Mandelier, a wine merchant from Matour, had penned his thoughts while laying the very floorboards that Mollier was now removing. His words, both poignant and playful, offered a glimpse into the mindset of a 19th-century craftsman. The letter read, in part: “This floor was laid by me, Guillaume Mandelier, wine merchant in Matour on June 15, 1894. Those who demolish it will say a de profundis for the repose of my soul and drink a toast in my honor.”  The discovery of Mandelier’s letter quickly spread through Matour, a village of roughly 1,200 inhabitants. The community was deeply moved by this tangible connection to their past. Guillaume, a current resident, expressed the sentiment shared by many: “It’s a beautiful story, and it’s a wonderful way to talk about our village.”

n a touching gesture, Mollier, his colleague, and Alain Guérin, a local elected official, decided to honor Mandelier’s last wishes. They visited a nearby bar to raise a glass in memory of the long-departed wine merchant, fulfilling his request for a toast. This act of respect bridged the gap between past and present, connecting the current inhabitants with their predecessors.  The community’s commitment to preserving history didn’t stop there. On February 9, 2025, a de profundis prayer was recited during Sunday mass, adhering to another of Mandelier’s requests. This spiritual acknowledgment further cemented the bond between Matour’s present and its rich past.

Preserving a piece of local history

Recognizing the historical significance of this find, the village has decided to preserve Mandelier’s letter for future generations. Plans are underway to display the letter at the local heritage center, ensuring that this unexpected glimpse into the past remains accessible to all.

This remarkable discovery serves as a reminder of the secrets our homes may hold. While some worry about leaving keys in locks overnight, Mandelier’s letter shows that our predecessors found creative ways to leave their mark. The story of Matour’s hidden letter reminds us that history is not just found in textbooks or museums, but can be uncovered in the most unexpected places, waiting to share its secrets with those who take the time to look.

This post is just to emphasize the importance of storytelling in our work. Have a wonderful day.
